Last month, Will had to attend a week-long work conference in England and I decided to tag along. I apologize for the delay in getting these photos online - I have no excuse... except that I was job hunting. More on this later, but I am training to be the librarian/media teacher at an international K-8 school. I'm excited.
Anyway, we stayed at the Brittania Inn, a cute little hotel on RAF Alconbury, which is a former Royal Air Force Base that has been leased to the U.S. Government since the end of World War II. The base is about an hour by train to London and 20 minutes by car to Cambridge in the beautiful English countryside. While will attended his training, I enjoyed taking runs or walks through the quaint country villages, filled with thatch-roof houses, churches and wild gardens. There was even an old Roman burial ground about a half-mile walk from the base... I guess we can't escape Italy!
One afternoon after Will finished his training, we decided to make the two-and-a-half hour drive to Stonehenge. We got there after it closed, but you can easily see it from the road. It was breathtakingly beautiful and strange at the same time.
We also spent a few evenings in Cambridge, known mostly for its universities. Please check out the photos of this adorable city - it was my favorite part of the trip. The pubs and restaurants of this city were cozy and unpretentious, while the buildings ached of history and character.
On Will's one day of free time, we visited London. We'd both been to London but had very, very different impressions. Will hated it and I loved it. We started the day taking in the Tower of London, then ate at Asian fusion restaurant Wagamama (a place I fondly remembered from my last visit), then took a long walk through the city stopping at Co
vent Garden market and Trafalgar Square. We caught a show - The Woman In Black - a long-running ghost story that was surprisingly predictable and slow, then went to the Tate Modern, London's famed modern art gallery. After checking out some strangely wacky pieces, we ate at a crowded waterside restaurant and headed back. Will now loves the city as much as I do.
We're now readying for our two-week trip to Oslo-Stockholm-Malmo-Copenhagen-Amsterdam... and will update the blog when we return. In the meantime, check out our photos from England!
